Karel
Kevin Karel is a visual artist based in Helsinki, Finland, with a focus on soft sculptures. His material-driven practice explores the formal possibilities of contemporary wall hangings through weaving and binding techniques. Emerging from an intuitive process, his pieces are constructed from recycled textiles filled with fiberfill, tightly intertwined with one another. Karel’s works often materialize in undulating forms that combine playfulness and order.
In his practice, Karel is interested in the haptic visuality of abundant textures that gently invite touch. He combines both improvised and carefully designed textile bindings, engaging in the interplay between systematically constructed and organic compositions.
Karel graduated from the Lahti Institute of Design in 2018 and worked in graphic design for half a decade before shifting to his art practice. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition at the Helsinki-based art gallery Loisti and participated in a site-specific group exhibition organized by Finnish Spirit.
